Colorado Triathlon

Colorado Triathlon

June 5, 2017 by Darin Gibby

What a morning in Bolder!

I just finished participating in the Colorado Triathlon in Boulder.  For some reason I seem to have the need to compare myself to the past year to see if I am slipping.  Of course I know this is inevitable, but somehow I think I can defy getting older. Because of the long winter I never had a chance to ride my bike. Instead, I did a few Peleton classes in my basement. The rest of my training was HIIT classes at the gym, some weight training and a little running.  I didn’t get into the pool until the week before. But, the HIIT training was really intense.

My time for the Olympic distance ended up being 2:43. That was two minutes slower than last year. I think the difference may have been the time wasted trying to get my wetsuit off. All in all, I felt pretty good about the results.

The most interesting part was that I wore my new Apple Watch. I used to wear a garmin but that doesn’t track calories. In a normal one hour HIIT class, a burn about 500. For this tri, I recorded a whopping 2,400. Now I see why I dropped four pounds and couldn’t get enough to eat.

Because of so much upcoming international travel, it may be another year before I put the wetsuit on again.
