Lawn and Crystal Lakes in RMNP

Lawn and Crystal Lakes in RMNP

July 5, 2020 by Darin Gibby

I took a chance to go to Big Crystal in the first week of July.  With its elevation and how the lake is tucked against the cliffs, I worried that there would still be a lot of snow.  But I wasn’t expecting all the ice.  It put a bit of a damper on the fishing since the place the fish usually hang it was still covered.  I was only able to catch one fish.

I jumped back down to Lawn Lake, that that was fantastic.  It was a beautify day and very little wind.  I fished a little bit too long and had to job back before it got dark.  When I was just about to my car, I rolled an ankle which didn’t feel too good.  I may need to take a week off while I heal up a bit.

The hike is a long one, nearly 17 miles round trip with roughly 3,000 feet elevation gain.  It took me two hours and twenty minutes to Lawn, then about another forty-five minutes up to Crystal, mostly because of all the snow and the sheer elevation.
