Animas River Spill

Animas River Spill

August 12, 2015 by Darin Gibby

Animas

Last Wednesday, we were on our way to hike the Needle Creek trail.  To get to the trail head, you take a really cool ride on the Sliverton to Durango railroad.  After about an hour, the train stops, they throw out your backpack and tell you goodbye.  You then hike about 7 miles into Chicago basin.

Just as we got on the train, we noticed that the Animas river looked like melted caramel, kind of like the river in the Willy Wonka movie.  We asked around and nobody knew why it was that color.  It wasn’t until we got home Saturday and saw the news that we understood what happened.

As you can see from the photo, the spill was much larger than the EPA is letting on.  What a horrible disaster.
